Revolution and After

When the Green Revolution happened in India in the mid 1960s, it was the panacea for the hungry. India was tottering on famine conditions and grain acquisition was almost completely dependent on America. The Green revolution changed everything. Grain production shot up and everything was all right. Then gradually the environmental downside of the so-called revolution started emerging.

The Green Revolution used high yielding seeds which required a kind of high-input combination. And this was lethal. Hundreds of tonnes of fertilizers and pesticides were being pumped to maintain the high yields of wheat and rice. And finally the cracks started showing.

This film looks at the environment and economic costs of the Green Revolution through the experiences of Punjab farmers. The scientists of the Punjab Agriculture University provided the scientific evidence of this disaster.
